A Moment in Time

I finally made it home!

After two years and seven months of socially distancing because of COVID-19, Ken, Grace and I arrived in my hometown of Carpinteria, California, to see family and dear friends. We had a FABULOUS trip filled with laughter, great meals, and gratitude. But something I couldn’t shake burned in the back of my mind.

New Mexico, our adopted state of four years, was on fire; the worst wildfires the state has ever seen. Headlines informed us that flames headed toward Santa Fe, where we live. I watched online as my neighbors posted apocalyptic-looking pictures featuring a sizzling red sun and dark murky skies and wondered what the future held in store.

As I sat on Rincon Point, an idyllic beach made famous by the Beach Boys, I grew melancholy thinking about global warming, which the fires in the southwest are attributed. Grace had a … Read more

How to Fix Recall in a Rescue Dog*

*GUEST POST

Eleven years ago, I got out of my car to look at a chihuahua I was thinking about rescuing. The dog was a 9-month-old Chihuahua female, who was being rehomed because of a behavioral issue that almost killed her.

The issue was frequent escaping, and then refusing to be caught once she was out the door. This fun game for her was a nerve-wracking experience for the owners who ultimately decided they couldn’t keep her.

Recall issues are a common problem with rescue dogs. If you are trying to figure out how to fix recall in a rescue dog, here are a few lessons I learned while teaching Leia to come when called.

Teach “Touch It” First

The moment I brought Leia home, it became obvious there was more to her recall issues than not knowing the command. She understood the assignment, and the assignment was to never

Austin Pets Alive! | Pancake
Nov 17, 2022

This is a story about a kitty cat who went on the lamb and is now back in our care, after taunting the staff and volunteers of APA! for over a year! We applaud her efforts, but it is time to get this little lady some medical attention.

When Pancake first arrived at APA!’s main facility, she was clearly pretty scared, making her a flight risk candidate. Fly, she did. Luckily, she stuck around campus, making appearances. For months, the staff and volunteers reported “Pancake sightings.” We even attempted several strategized opportunities to get her back into our hands, with the biggest goal of getting her spayed. We have several “community cats” hanging around our facility – our very own barn cats! We care about this population and want to make sure they receive necessary medical attention so that everyone stays safe and can live a healthy

With Trauma Too Deep To Cope, She Wedged Herself Between The Walls

A dog, named Kita, was found on a large piece of property. When she was rescued, she was confused and afraid. She couldn’t comprehend that these humans wanted to give her proper food and shelter, and above all, a second chance at life.

Kita was too overwhelmed to handle it so she did what she had to in order to cope… she shut down completely. Her rescue journey began with her suffering and it was completely heartbreaking.

Once Kita was taken to her foster home, she curled into a tiny ball. She made herself so small that she could wedge herself between the walls. When Kita did move from that spot, she’d sit and stare into the corner of the room. The walls were her shield, her barrier, her protection. It was gut-wrenching.

Her foster mom explains, in the video below, that even when
