Calling My Dog off Rabbit Scent at Night

A black and white photo shows a bright white dog standing in a dark backyard with leaves on the ground. The dog is alert and his tail is curled over his back.

I love training recall. When my dogs come to me, I love making it worth their while. I love being generous with treats, toys, and fun.

It’s hard to stage a surprise recall with Lewis. Whenever he is lingering in the yard and I get the bright idea to go get a high-value treat and practice his recall, I find him waiting for me at the door when I get back. He and his nose are too smart for their own good. (He’s not the first one of my dogs to have that problem!) But the other night he was very turned on by recent rabbit visits in the yard. He was enjoying it so much I let him spend quite a bit of time out there. I sat on the cold cast iron patio chair longer than usual, taking occasional videos while he galloped, paused, stopped, sniffed, and galloped

DOG MUZZLES -HOW TO CHOOSE & FIT

Dog Muzzles, how to choose and fit one is a basic skill every dog family must master. We tend to think of dog muzzles as an uncomfortable contraption or even punishment for our dogs!

In fact a muzzle may be your dog or pups best friend when they are ill or injured or simply on their daily walk! The muzzle is a must have in every pet family’s pet care kit. In fact, even if your puppy does not need a muzzle, introduce the it to them when they are young. This best practice makes it easy for your dog and you in the unlikely event of injury or illness and that frantic dash to the vet’s office!

After Killing Thousands Of Canines For Consumption, Dog Meat Slaughterhouse Shut Down

To so many of us dog lovers in the United States, our canine companions are both our best friends and beloved family members. But in other cultures, dogs are sometimes captured, killed, and then consumed. Which not only puts innocent animals at risk, but spreads rabies like crazy.

That’s why, shutting down a dog meat slaughterhouse in Vietnam is such a huge victory for Humane Society International.

Much to our dismay, there is a market for dog meat. Not everyone sees canines as companion animals, but rather, as a means to make a profit. Sadly, dogs go missing all the time in Vietnam, and families are left wondering what happened to their beloved best friends.

Every year, five million dogs are stolen from their family or are snatched from the street to be slaughtered for human consumption. And Vietnam kills more dogs for their meat than any other country

Tips For Walking Your Dog Safely In Winter

Dogs can enjoy playing in snow in the wintertime, but the colder weather and darker evenings brings some challenges as well. Here are some tips to make sure that both you and your dog continue to stay fit and active during the winter months.

Keep salt and grit off paws

Salt and grit which are used to keep roads and pavements clear in icy weather can build up on dog’s paws, causing irritation. Therefore, it is important to wash their paws if you have been walking on treated surfaces. The charity PDSA advises that you could also apply a thin layer of butter to the pads of the foot, to help prevent cracking.

If your dog really seems to dislike walking on ice, snow, and grit, you could consider buying him a set of boots. This will keep the pads of his feet protected, and prevent snow from building up

How to Fix Recall in a Rescue Dog*

*GUEST POST

Eleven years ago, I got out of my car to look at a chihuahua I was thinking about rescuing. The dog was a 9-month-old Chihuahua female, who was being rehomed because of a behavioral issue that almost killed her.

The issue was frequent escaping, and then refusing to be caught once she was out the door. This fun game for her was a nerve-wracking experience for the owners who ultimately decided they couldn’t keep her.

Recall issues are a common problem with rescue dogs. If you are trying to figure out how to fix recall in a rescue dog, here are a few lessons I learned while teaching Leia to come when called.

Teach “Touch It” First

The moment I brought Leia home, it became obvious there was more to her recall issues than not knowing the command. She understood the assignment, and the assignment was to never
