Wild Wednesday: Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre shares what you need to know about bird flu and how they are coping

This year my conversation about conservation with the Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre (OVWBCC) team flew me in a different direction. Wildlife rescue is serious business. It’s even more so when navigating a contagious viral infection like H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), more commonly referred to as avian flu or ‘bird flu.’

It’s difficult to provide care to animals with infections diseases. The prognosis can be worse and risks increase for other animals in the facility and in some cases, humans too. Imagine the patient who tested positive and can’t talk- only tweet! And I’m not talking about Twitter. That’s the challenge the OVWBCC is facing right now.

I connected with Patty McLaughlin, OVWBCC Education Program Manager, and Sandra Sawers, OVWBCC Executive Director to learn

Pet of the Month: July

Let’s give a round of ap-paws to our adorable July Pet of the Month, Bear! His full name is Beartholomew Gordon Buhr, and his birthday is on Valentine’s Day. This cutie is just a year and a half old, but has gone through so much before finding his furever home with his loving family now.

Bear is a rescue, and his family is not sure what exactly is his breed. Their best guess is that he’s a cross between an Australian Kelpie and a Border Collie.

Throwback: This photo was taken when Bear was first brought home.

He was rescued February 2022. His fur mom had just seen a Facebook post about two pups needing to be re-homed because the bigger and older one didn’t like them. She, together with Bear’s fur dad, drove a few towns over to get him. It was only when they got home that they

Pet of the Month: September

Let us give it up for September’s Pet of the Month (keep for ap-paws) Fozzy! This month’s topped winner of cuteness is an Australian Labradoodle who just celebrated his next birthday. Australian Labradoodles are a trifecta of fluffy cuteness that involves poodle, lab and cocker spaniel.

This playful pup is a mild soul who spends his days actively playing tug-of-war with his big sister Kai, of the similar breed and fluff. Even though he is a two-a long time-old, Fozzy is a pup at coronary heart who still enjoys to knead and suckles his bed (really do not explain to his doggy daycare good friends nevertheless, he has an image to continue to keep up).
