Clyde the Border Terrier is two points away from getting a Grand Winner. At the 2021 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Present in Ohio held in June, he and his operator/handler, Charlotte Wagner, took house an award of merit, inserting in the leading six. “If you have a really good pet dog, you will have a winner,” Wagner reported. “But if you have a doggy that is the product of the crop, the place you are like, god, people today have to have to see this canine, which is what Clyde is like to me.”

Border Terriers were being initially bred in England to follow foxes into their foxholes. “They are a rough-coated, leggy terrier, this means they’re tall,” Wagner defined. “They were being developed to observe on horseback. And when the fox hunters go out and ship the hounds right after the fox, effectively, your Foxhound isn’t going to suit in that hole. So what you do is you ship in a Border Terrier to get rid of the fox. The breed standard defines them as ‘hard as nails.’”

Wagner explained that when judges evaluate Border Terriers, they appear for a tough coat that can face up to brambles and briars, elastic skin to shake off fox bites and a rib cage small enough to in good shape down a foxhole. “The concept is sort equals function,” Wagner reported.

But just since Border Terriers are hard doesn’t necessarily mean they are vicious. “Take a Jack Russell Terrier, and anything you dislike about a Jack Russell Terrier but like about them at the identical time. Now take out 50 per cent of the asshole and the ‘f— you’ and exchange it with a yellow lab. Now you have a Border Terrier.”

Wagner, a longtime resident of Bean Hollow around Flint Hill, has beloved pet dogs her entire daily life. When she was a very little girl, her neighbor, Tony Trujillo, gave her a ebook about them. “He experienced this entire library of pet dog books … I recall there was this just one Eyewitness pet dog e-book … I loved that ebook so significantly I broke the backing on it. I even now have it to this day,” she reported. “I memorized pet dog breeds. I preferred to know what distinct pet dogs could do, place of origin, dimensions, temperament, alternate names for breeds, all these info and clues.”

Wagner experienced her to start with dog when she was 13 and by no means appeared back. Now she operates her very own enterprise teaching canines for companionship, agility and therapeutic companies. And with a history in animal science, Wagner is now moving into the organization of pet breeding. In a pair months, Clyde will be the proud father of a new litter.

“My purpose is superior breed preservation and conservation, which signifies … there might only be a single or two puppies that conform to the excellent conventional. I imagine that’s the most important misinterpretation of clearly show breeders — they are developing great high quality pets. If they are blessed, there’s one particular or two that are worthy to shift ahead in a breeding system.”
