Dog groomers, doggy day care still experiencing increased demand

Pandemic puppies — a term often used for dogs acquired over the last year and a half — are all too common in dog parks and home offices. But for the businesses that serve them, like doggy day care, boarding and grooming, there have been a lot of ups and downs.

“It’s been awful,” said Cathy Sutton, owner of Happy Tails Doggy Daycare in Franklin. “We suffered for lack of business for a long time, and then when things opened back up, everybody during that period decided to get a dog, and so then we were just bombarded with people that wanted to come to day care.”

Sutton, who has been operating for almost 20 years, said at first, with people working at home, they didn’t need the day care’s services, even though she said dogs benefit greatly from interacting with other dogs. But now the business has been having

Maine animal shelter rescues nearly 40 animals from shelters hit hard by Ida

KENNEBUNK, Maine (WMTW) – The Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk has rescued nearly 40 cats and dogs from shelters hit hard by Hurricane Ida.

The shelter partnered with Animal Rescue Front to bring 17 dogs and 22 cats to Maine from Hancock County, Mississippi. The animals arrived Wednesday.

Shelter officials said the rescued cats and dogs will be examined, spayed or neutered, received necessary vaccinations and be microchipped before being put up for adoption next week.

Anyone wishing to help support the animals is encouraged to make a financial donation though the Animal Welfare Society’s website.

People wishing to adopt the pets should go to the AWS website for more information, including how to make an adoption appointment.

What happened to Noel Fitzpatrick’s dog Keira? Supervet heartbroken as border terrier dies

Noel Fitzpatrick, the renowned Irish supervet, has announced the death of his beloved dog Kiera.

The Co Laois native, who has saved hundreds of dogs’ lives, shared the poignant news on social media on Thursday night just before 8pm.

The 53-year-old said: “It is with profound sadness I share the news that Keira, my beloved companion of nearly 14 years, has passed away.

“My heart is truly broken. She was my best friend in the whole wide world.

“My friend Amy and her son Kyle are broken-hearted too since they have shared her guardianship with me all this time.

“We were so very blessed and lucky to have had her in our lives, lighting the way with her magnificent unconditional love.”

Keira spent much of the pandemic recovering from an injury having been hit by a van outside the Supervet’s Surrey practice in October 2020.
